CARING FOR OUR HERD
One of the main pillars of Project Elephant is the care we provide for the elephants living here at Blackpool Zoo. Project Elephant Base Camp is at the heart of the project, it's where we strive to obtain the best standards of husbandry and welfare for our resident herd.
The care we provide for our herd can be broken down into four main areas - welfare, the facility, our staff and breeding.
WELFARE
Every day we strive to obtain the best standards of husbandry and welfare for our herd of Asian elephants.
BASE CAMP
Base Camp, our brand new elephant house, is the hub of Project Elephant here at Blackpool Zoo.
KEEPERS
None of this would be possible without the dedication of our passionate, competent and knowledgeable elephant keepers.
BREEDING
Here at Blackpool Zoo we play a vital role in conservation, by breeding species at risk of extinction in the wild.
BEYOND BLACKPOOL
It is our aim to ensure that we are constantly evaluating and evolving our care programme to allow our elephants to be cared for to the highest level.
We hope that what we learn can be shared with other collections to help the progression of captive elephant management programmes both in the UK and further afield.
